The Importance of Shasti Vratham

Shashti, a significant day in the Hindu calendar, is dedicated to Lord Muruga, the deity revered for his divine power and blessings. Observing Shashti Vratham on this day is believed to invoke Lord Muruga’s grace, fulfilling genuine desires and dreams. Those who observe this vratam with devotion are blessed by his abundant grace.

The number Six holds special significance in Lord Muruga's symbolism: He has six faces, his primary abodes are six, his mantra, Sa Ra Va Na Bha Va, consists of six syllables, and Shasti itself falls on the sixth day of the lunar cycle.

Worshipping Lord Muruga on this day aligns devotees with his divine energies, ensuring that their prayers are answered.

Shasti Vratham Procedure

Each Hindu lunar month has two Shasti days: one after Amavasya (New Moon) and one after Purnima (Full Moon). Among these, the Shasti that follows Amavasya is considered the most auspicious for fasting and spiritual practices.we called as Sukla shashti.

Steps to Observe Shasti Vratham:

  1. Fasting: Begin the fast at sunrise on the Shasti day and continue until the following day’s sunrise.

  2. Visit a Murugan Temple: If possible, visit a nearby temple or Murugan powerspot to have his darshan and seek his blessings.

  3. Dietary Guidelines: Depending on your health, you may choose to consume only water, juice, or milk during the fasting period. However, refrain from eating non-vegetarian food.

  4. Sacred Texts and Mantras: Read from the Skanda Purana and chant the Subramanya mantras to invoke Muruga’s blessings. Reciting devotional songs such as Kumarasthavam, Skanda Shashti Kavasam, and Skanda Guru Kavacham also enhances spiritual energy.

  5. Muruga Altar Setup: Place an image or statue of Lord Muruga on a pedestal. Decorate it with fresh flowers and light lamps and incense (dhoop) before the idol as an offering.

  6. Offerings (Bhog): Offer fruits and other delicacies in front of the deity. Special offerings, such as balls made from foxtail millet and honey, are considered particularly favored by Muruga.

  7. Prayers: Pray with sincerity and devotion, requesting Lord Muruga to bestow his blessings upon you, granting peace, health, and success in your endeavors.

By observing Shasti Vratham with true devotion, one can experience Lord Muruga’s divine presence and his choicest blessings.
